Vineyard Services

HHVSlogoBLACKPerry Pentiuk is excited to announce his alliance with Sam Simpson of Harbor Hill Vineyard Services. Giving his clients the ability to transform vacant land into vineyards, orchards or hop farms.

Sam Simpson is the Wine Maker and General Manager of Good Harbor Vineyards, Harbor Hill Fruit Farms and Harbor Hill Vineyard Services (HHVS).

From Grape to Glass and More

Sam Simpson is a third generation fruit farmer on the Leelanau Peninsula. His grandfather, John Simpson, started farming cherries in the late 1950s while developing and selling real estate.  Sam’s father, Bruce Simpson, grew up working on the farm and in the mid-1970s went to college to study agriculture at Michigan State.  Bruce and John recognized the potential to grow wine grapes in the late 1970s, so Bruce headed west to study at the world-renowned UC Davis.

In 1979, Bruce moved home to Leelanau with his wife Debbie and planted their first vineyard.  As a result, Good Harbor Vineyards was established in 1980. From 1980 through the early 2000s Bruce managed his vineyards and ran a consulting and planting business throughout the Leelanau Peninsula where Sam worked closely with his father up to his untimely death in 2008. In 2008 Sam and his sister Taylor Simpson took over the full operation of the fruit farms, vineyard service, and winery.

Sam studied wine making and viticulture at Michigan State and the University of Cape Town, but graduated in finance with a focus on international economics. Since 2008, Sam has been in charge of viticulture, enology and acted as the GM for the businesses. Taylor has focused her energy on sales and marketing. With the rapidly expanding wine business of Northern Michigan, Harbor Hill Vineyard Service (HHVS) has a full time staff of highly trained agricultural workers and one of Michigan’s most highly regarded vineyard managers, Craig Cunningham.

HHVS specializes in growing grapes but also works with cider apples and can also provide general agricultural services on request.  They service from grape (or apple) to glass, and offer custom wine or cider production if the customer is interested.  The service begins with an initial phone consult followed by a site visit and evaluation along with a review of the topical maps of the area. After a full analysis is completed, a detailed production schedule with three-year plan is developed and executed.

If you would like more information please contact Sam Simpson at (231) 944-2870.
